I find it hard believe that a talented artist such as Dave Matthews does not believe in a 'higher power.'

For me the lyrics to "Eh Hee" 'Praise God who has many names' alludes to the myriad of ways we as humans can show caring and compassion to our fellow citizens. As mentioned in some of the comments on this site (thanks for the dialogue Terry!) love is one of the obvious ways we can do this. If Dave's main driving force relate to this concept, then he is a blessed person, of the type we need more of on this tiny, tiny planet.

Conversely the lyrics ..."The devil has many more" for me, sums up the essence of getting through a day in our modern, fast paced world; as there are so many distractions and/or negative influences that beat us down and create a self centered world/reality.

If you can follow the above view and are a open to small challenge I submit the following.

Yes, religion is mans folly. The dogma, ritual that so many in our country do not relate to has led to a major tear in the fabric of our day to day functioning. Yet, if you were to walk into almost any church, anywhere, you would find Love. As most every church is attempting to feed the hungry, house the homeless and reach out to their communities.

I am a member of a great community church here in Northern California. I call myself a Christian and look forward to our non-dogmatic sunday services. For me they allow me a chance to get centered, 're-charge the batteries' so to speak and prepare for the onslaught of the coming week.

Dave's lyrics, ... 'With love that my mother gave me' he lets us know that if we trust what we know as right, to love one another, that we can bring the devil to his knees! Go out there and accomplish this in whatever way you may deem appropriate, but do go forward.

I agree with Daniel on Sept. 23rd of last year.
Dave is admittedly agnostic and he was raised in South AFrica with non-violent beliefs. His songs, old and new, really just point out that organized religion is not the answer and that we as humans from any background or culture need to simply love each other. His music causes us to release our fear and embrace our love for not only others but ourselves. We are all energy, and it is up to us to decide how to use it. If the video seems disturbing to people, perhaps it's because their energy is displaced or their minds are too closed. The world needs more people like Dave.

Below are the lyrics
"Praise God" is what people say all the time in the name of good but "the devil has many more [names]" is saying that even though people preach good, they only work to condemn those they don't agree with.

Praise God who has many names
but the devil have many more
with the love that my mother gave me
I’m gonna drop the devil to the floor
I’m gonna drop the devil to his knees
I’m gonna drop the devil to his knees

There is always someone that’s trying to convince you
that they know the answer to matter the question
Be weary of those who believe in a neat little world
because it’s just Fucken Crazy…
you know that it is

Walkin' along in this haze of confusion
Sometimes I can laugh but at times it takes all of my strength
To find enough reason to take the next step…but I will

Somebody gonna save the world... ayhee yeah...

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it’s greatest achievement
We’re barely, we’re just a collection of cells
Overrating ourselves
God I’m avoiding the truth

Dave's agnostic. What that means for this song, I'm not sure, but it seems to be commenting on Christian arrogance in somehow knowing that we are so important to the universe. His songs that knock god seem most concerned with hypocricy, and on a more optimistic level: that humans should focus on loving each other while we're on earth instead of looking so far forward we miss the point of life. I'm not buying into any of this, only taking it as I see dave. I think he's right in the sense that religion can cause more conflict than resolution.

The lyrics are not 'christian' based. the idea of the righteous versus the devil is an archetype of humanity that exists in all religions. This is not neccesarily about christianity. I don't know what it's about! It's certainly critical of society and deems the devil who is more powerful than god (a blasphemous idea), to be the one who makes us so narcistic. We embrace our own vanity. Completely besides that, the video is absolutely intoxicating. The sped-up cinematography with Dave and the dancers adds brillisnt tension to the work. I am absolutely amazed by his vision to create this video. He has tackled God/Devil issues before a lot in his songwriting, but I feel this effort is something special.
