zeitgeist- review
“Oh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your death bed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that going for me, which is nice.
Today there will be no ear bud madness…but there is a album review.
I will start by going on record as a huge SP fan! For me, it all started back in High School with their original Gish album in 91. So, when I heard a new album was coming out, I was excited, and a little nervous about it. It has been 7 years since there last album, and I can say with confidence….we have missed you guys! The new Smashing Pumpkins however is missing a huge ingredient…James Iha! James was a huge part of the sound with his amazing guitar riffs, tones and his unique spin musically. So, the review….
Overall, the album is ok, maybe even good, but not great. I would give it a 7 out of 10 for my overall ranking.
Things I liked:
Unique sounds from song to song.
Billy’s emotion is poured into each song.
Chamberlin on drums is spectacular!
They still have the unique “feel” of Smashing Pumpkins.
Things I did not like:
Guitars are muddy and don’t really cut through.
Billy’s voice is weaker, and now his background vocals are not near as sharp as before.
Missing the song that just grabs me and holds me for entire 3 min.
Songs that are worth a download: In Order
Bleeding The Orchid
United States
That’s The Way (My Love Is)
Doomsday Clock
Starz

Yeah another original Gish fan! In high school I wore my SP heart shirt with that “I’m a fan of a cool band you’ve never heard” chip on my shoulder and in college I was in line for the midnight release of Mellon Collie. What a dork! But the music is cool stuff! I was excited to hear they were back in the studio, but I have to agree it can’t be the same without James Iha. I’ve heard Tarantula on Sirius but will have to download the album here soon.

When I listened to the previews of each song on iTunes, I got the same impression about the lack of a ‘gripping’ song.
it’s disappointing to hear it confirmed, but I’ll probably still pick it up.
Thanks for the review!

I’m glad you posted this… I’ve noticed this album was out and was putting a little thought (occasionally) to buying it… your review was very helpful.
BTW maybe you’re the next big music critic!!
