don’t be fooled by beginners luck

Wow, this weekend I had the awesome opportunity to lead the internet campus as the “host”. This was my first time leading as a fill in campus pastor at LifeChurch.tv. I will first say that it was fun…but I totally blew it at the first experience….

So here is the deal. The opener, or the first time that I come on camera I had 90 seconds to do the welcome, and intro. Well…on Tuesday, I jumped in the studio to practice with the camerea, my ears, and the mic and frankly I nailed it on the first try. Yep, nailed it on the first try……and that was a HUGE problem. Nailing it on the first try was totally beginners luck! So my confidence was high, had my script down and walked into the studio ready to hit it out of the park at the first experience. Well….that was not the case. My 90 seconds turned into what would of been about 240 seconds if I could have kept going! I looked down, saw I had about 3 second left, stopped right in the middle of a sentence and “handed it off” to Craig. Talk about blowing it…wow that was awkward for sure.

So, after that fumble on the goal-line, I decided to bring in the polymath. Let me paint the picture for you….doing all of this, you are in a sound proof studio, with 3 cameras and nothing but a little preview window into the tech room. You are all alone, and staring at a camera. Well, that does not work for me…I need a live studio audience. So I brought in Zach, and practiced a few times and got much better. Still, a long way from great!

Lesson learned…“don’t be fooled by beginners luck”

So my weekend was a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the opportunity, but I tell ya….I will stick with the “fill in” campus pastor role!

Hope you guys had a great weekend!

  • No studio audience is a TOUGH gig. Takes some getting used to for sure. But I find it VERY hard to believe you fumbled on the goal line.

  • Terry,

I missed the intro and didn’t log in to the online experience until Craig was already in his message, but I must say, BRAVO on the internet campus! I haven’t visited since February, and it’s amazing the difference! Seamless technology, intuitive experience and interface…just a job well done by you and your entire team. Great use of a non-traditional ministry tool to spread the kingdom of God. Bless you

  • Terry - Thanks for your insights. Consistency over a period of time that leads to effectiveness and helping to produce fruit in God’s kingdom.

  • Jay, appreciate your vote of confidence. You are probably right…fumble on the goal line might be a little harsh…but I am my hardest critique.

Clayton, glad you liked the interface.

Andrew…there you go, getting deep and meaningful on me again. :) Thanks man…
