one punk under god

One Punk Under God
I just finished watching a 6 episode TV show called “One Punk Under God”. Some of you might be familiar with the show, it is Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. Jay Bakker is a pastor of Revolution Church, based in Atlanta, NYC and Charlotte.

I really enjoyed the show and getting to know Jay Bakker better. We have all heard the stories surrounding Jim and Tammy Faye, but I never really new the story and the life behind the story. I so found myself pulling for Jay through the entire series. I also found myself being challenged by why I believe what I believe, and really thinking about living out unconditional love. Jay has an amazing heart for the Lord, and loves people in a way that I appreciate.

Anyway, thought I would share the info… and on another note. There is quite a bit of controversial content in the show…not yo mama’s Bible belt theology being displayed! Would love to here your thoughts if you have seen the show.

  • I was drawn to the show because it does not fit my reality of church. Holding services in a bar, smoking, drinking, nose rings, etc… That’s a long way from the conservative Christian home I was raised in (my mom is the church lady - literally).

But like Velvet Elvis, it pushed me to think differently and open my mind and heart, and rethink my perception of “what a Disciple of Christ” looks like.

It may not be my daddy’s church…. but it is my father’s church.

  • Never heard of it…must be on a blocked channel. Seriously, what a burden to have parents that were on PTL, TBN, EIEIO.

I like pursuing why I believe what I believe.

  • I don’t get it. I’ve seen bits and pieces. I appreciate Jay’s authenticity. But can’t stand his positions on some controversial topics. I totally appreciate the concept of church in a bar. Where else? If he’s genuine… then more power to him. However, I can’t help but wonder if all he’s trying to do is draw a HUGE divide between his parent’s ministry and his. Everything about TBN was very pretty… very little of Jay’s ministry is pretty. But they’re both televised and sensationalized.

  • Scott, great statement…may not be by daddy’s church…but it is my father’s church!

    Pursue on Michael.

Gina, I understand where you are coming from, and can appreciate your view. Jay is different, and does have some controversial views. I don’t necessarily agree with his views, but I hole heartedly agree with his passion for people.

  • First of all, the sheen on the Emerging Church is wearing off. There are significant theological problems I find within the movement. I could care less how many tats or piercings that Jimmy’s boy has — my problem is with the recent stance he has taken that contends that you can be a practicing homosexual and also be a Christ-follower. It is totally cool that his church has a heart for the disenfranchised. It is not cool to get away from clear Biblical teaching. Bottom line — it is becoming quite clear that a large part of the EC is liberalism repackaged.

  • Rocket, this original post was really never about the Emerging Church, or that entire movement. Wow, I have not idea what the Emerging Church really is, and I am not sure they have come to terms with that as well. I think they know what they are “not”….

Do I personally agree with what “Jimmy’s boy” is saying from a Theological stance…No. Not everything.

But here is where I think we need to be very careful, and I am not sure this is what you meant but: “my problem is with the recent stance he has taken that contends that you can be a practicing homosexual and also be a Christ-follower.”

Rocket, I do believe that you can be practicing homosexuality and be a Christ-follower. I have personally met many, and have some friends that fit in that category. I also believe that you can be practicing adultery and be a Christ-follower…. I believe you can be practicing any sin, and be a Christ-follower.

This is the very reason why I am so thankful for Jesus.

  • By the way, I wasn’t trying to slam Bakker, by calling him “Jimmy’s boy” I was just being a little creative. I believe that Bakker’s church would fall somewhat within the confines of the EC movement. As far as “practicing” goes it sounds like you come from a Calvinistic perspective, whereas I come from a Wesleyan perspective. I never look to argue that with anyone, because no one wins. Obviously, who is a Christ-follower and who is not, is a matter that God ultimately knows. So I just say that Jesus said, “whoever would follow me must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me”. Whoever is doing that is a Christ-follower. I do believe that sexuality and morality come into play in regard to “taking up, denying and following.” Thanks for your reply. See ya.

  • Love ya Rocket Rod….a good discussion for sure.

  • Terry I thought you were from Dallas? I love it when I get challenged to love people outside my “white bread world”. Tatoos, piercings, gays, under resourced, bi-racial, gothic, liberals, Texans. Is this a great country or what? I used to only like people like me. But at the end of the day who really has an affintiy for middle aged, medium height, medium build, middle income men anyway? I like what John Ortberg says, “Everybody’s normal to get to know them.”

  • Great thoughts from Robert Davis.
