Google opening up online office suite to nonprofits

A buddy of mine just sent me this link. I have been out of the blog world for a few days and missed it.
Looks like Google is opening up there Apps to nonprofits. This is huge for the local church for sure. With just moving your church to Gmail as a church staff email solution your church could save thousands of dollars! Churches spend a ton of money just fighting spam, managing servers, tech staff, etc….
If your church is looking for a great email solution and you don’t want to spend money fighting spam, or managing Exchange servers take a look at Google….it’s free!
It could also lower the cost churches spend on having a static IP address, which could be used on other areas of ministry.
Great point Kevin. There are a lot of benefits that this will bring to the local church.
Though we’ve been on Exchange for 7+ years, moving to Google really intrigues me. Though I haven’t made time yet, I want to think through what will be gained and lost before I pull the trigger. Your thoughts?
Andrew, it would be a very smart move to look at the positive and the negative. It has been many, many years since I have managed an IT department, and core infrastructure….So, i doubt I am going to be your best resource here.
Looks like Google has a great tour and resource center at https://www.google.com/a/
I played with Google Apps — and it IS pretty powerful. But it still lacks some of the features of Exchange.
Check out Kerio Mail Server. It offers practically everything Exchange does, for a fraction of the cost. And it supports open standards like vCal, as well as a much better range of client apps (the Mac support is phenomenal at least as good as Outlook!)
Terry,
What are your thoughts on Zimbra as an exchange alternative?
Jeff, I really do not know anything about it. I see that Yahoo just bought them….Trying to keep up with Google I guess. It looks really nice!
Wish I had more for you.
I LOVE Google. I like exchange. But, As a small business owner, i am looking for an alternative to exchange where myself and 4-5 people can collaborate in real time while being mobile.
Aside from Gmails new IMAP, do you know if there is a way to do the collaboration I am speaking of with the Google calendar and address book?
